Android photo picker: review selected files before sharing

Before confirming media access, check which files are selected, not just which thumbnails are visible in the gallery. A nearby private image can be included accidentally even when the intended screenshot looks correct. The relevant question is what the app will receive from this selection.

Inspect the selected set

Google documents reviewing multiple items through View selected, removing unwanted items, then choosing Add. Some steps require Android 13 or later; the app can limit selection count. Labels and availability vary. Google's documented controls.

Work through an accidental extra photo

Imagine you intend to send one public screenshot with a support question. A private photo is also marked. Open the selected-items view, identify the unwanted photo and deselect it. Before confirming, check that the remaining selected set contains only the intended screenshot. This is a hypothetical exercise, not a request to upload either file.

If the count still says two when you expect one, stop and inspect the selection again. Do not assume the extra mark belongs to an invisible duplicate or that the app will choose the right item for you. A count discrepancy tells you the review is unfinished, even if the first thumbnail looks familiar.

For practice, use non-sensitive dummy images. Give them visibly different content so you can distinguish the intended item from the extra one. Practising selection and cancellation does not require completing an upload or involving another person's photographs. Cancel if the interface leaves you uncertain about the files selected.

Do not mistake selection for redaction

A correct selection still needs a content check. A screenshot can contain account names or messages even when it is the file you intended. Choosing a file does not automatically remove that information, strip metadata or redact sensitive regions. Inspect the file itself before deciding it is suitable to share.

Removing an item from the current selection does not delete copies already sent elsewhere. If an earlier confirmation included the wrong photo, treat that as a separate receiving-service issue. Keep prevention of the next accidental share distinct from assumptions about whether a previous copy has been removed.
